Date in office: 1933-1955
In July 1933, the Sacramento County Charter was established and with
that, Charles W. Deterding, Jr. was named the first County Executive.
During his tenure, Deterding, Jr. was recognized as an efficient
administrator with outstanding leadership qualities and was
instrumental in securing funding for the construction of the Folsom
and Nimbus Dams. Working previously as an engineer, Deterding
supported the development and construction of several bridges in
Sacramento County, including the Paintersville Bridge and Steamboat
Slough Bridge. Detering served as County Executive until December 1955.
Born in 1885, he was the son of Charles and Mary Deterding, who were among the first settlers
of Carmichael. His family previously owned Deterding Ranch property in Carmichael, which is
now known as Ancil Hoffman Park.
